Pumpkin headbands

I wanted to create something autumnal, kind of halloweeny, but something that could be easily made to order, and I settled on pumpkins, because really... is there any more perfectly embodiment of autumn and halloween?

I wasn't sure exactly how the pumpkins were going to turn out, but I have some lovely thick orange yarn that I'm slowly reclaiming from an unfinished and abandoned project, so I decided that would be perfect to use. Combined with a large scrap of brown sock yarn that is big enough to keep but not big enough to use by itself, and I had everything I needed.

I chose headbands, because they're nice and quick to make in-between my current larger projects, and also because it's getting colder at this time of year, but it's not necessarily cold enough for a full on hat. I don't know about you, but my ears really suffer in cold winds and a headband is often just what I need to cover my ears just enough to stop me from getting earache.

Originally I had thought that I would have a section of band at the top and bottom, with the pumpkins inbetween, but it became clear quite quickly that the pumpkins I was making would be really chunky and pop right out of the headband. A small section of band wouldn't have been strong enough to sustain the weight, so once I'd made the pumpkins I added extra rounds behind the pumpkins and stalks so that it was much more sturdy.

Accidental 3D pumpkins...

I tested 2 different sizes - toddler and child - but didn't have enough of the original green band yarn to make an adult one as well.

No problem, I'll just order yarn in... I thought.

Then I remembered I had 4 balls of Louisa Harding Cassia sitting largely unused from another unfinished/abandoned projects (I do have quite a lot of those haha) - 2 light brown and 2 yellowy.

I used the light brown ones to make an adult size, as well as another toddler size.

I'm really pleased with how these turned out, and I'll be making some with the yellow as well, eventually.

For now though, I'm back to my large projects!
