Embossed Leaves CAL :: Day 1

(Before I start, please ignore the terribly long time it's been since I wrote a post. I did say when I started this blog that I was not good at blogging, and I really wasn't lying! *cough*not posted since April*cough*)

Let me start by saying that I've never done a craft-a-long before. Never even been tempted. Honestly, it's always just felt like a terrible idea - holding myself back to keep in time with other people! I crochet FAST. And I'm impatient.

And then THIS dropped into my inbox, and I had a bit of a squee!-love-at-first-sight moment... and my never-done-a-craft-a-long phase ended abruptly.

Both myself and Mr Starfish are only getting one present for Yule this year (unless the children suddenly come over all generous and buy us something with their pocket money - a teapot would be lovely, kids, if you're reading this! - but it seems unlikely) and I decided a couple of months back I was going to make them both.

Mr Starfish is having this jumper, with several extra inches of torso as he's about eleventy billion feet tall.

I was planning on making myself this, which I absolutely adore, but just could not settle on a colour combination that I loved. The Embossed Leaves Cardi email appearing in my inbox was just perfect timing, especially as there is (or was, if you're reading after Oct 19th 2018) an offer on to get the pattern for free when purchasing the required quantity of yarn from Bonita Yarns.

Which I did.

Obviously.

Because yum...

It's called Oh Jungleland, and oh myyyy.....

It transitions from brown, through turquoise, to lime green, and I am totally in love.

Part One was released overnight last night (27th Sept 2018) so I'm chronicling my progress. I had hoped to get this out before midnight Sept 28th, but I haven't managed that, sadly.

Day 1

I actually made a gauge swatch. I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually done this before. I didn't photograph it because... well because it felt weird enough making it at all, there really doesn't need to be evidence. Just imagine a square of stitches here and it'll be all good:

[imaginary swatch]

I took it out with me and continued while my eldest had a creative writing lesson this afternoon, and bonded over yarny-knitting-crochet stuff with two friends.

I was interested to see how the colour changes of the yarn would work out. I've not used Dream Swirls before, and it's always fun using a new yarn.

It's made up of 4 strands, which are actually easy to miss when yarning over or pulling loops through, but it's easier if your tension is tighter rather than looser. The strands change colour one strand at a time, so the first change was 1 strand in turquoise and the other 3 still brown, and then after a while it changed to 2 turquoise and 2 brown, and so on. The first colour change was very conveniently located right at the beginning of row 10, which I thought was nice!

Three stitches into Row 10, and we have turquoise!

Here it is on my patio. I feel I should point out right now that I would never put a customer's garment on my patio, even if it is relatively clean, but because this is for myself, and I don't particularly care, I figured it would be fine ;)

The colour change almost looks planned!

A close up. Plus, pretty stitch marker!

I have actually done more than this, but I realised as I was making our dinner that I needed to take a picture before the sun set otherwise it would look weird under artificial light. I hurriedly took the pictures above at 7pm, at 7.15pm it was completely dark outside!

Tomorrow (this) morning I will take another of where I have reached this evening before continuing.
