Better late than never, right?

Last year I decided I would make the kids soft toys for Yule. I don't make soft toys often because we already have mountains of soft toys (!!) but handmade ones are rather different to shop bought ones.

Squish chose a phantom, phantoms being antagonist creatures from Animal Jam that she is rather fond of, and Lumpy chose a dinosaur pattern which I had already made and he really liked.

At the time, Giraffe didn't pick a soft toy and we agreed that I would make her fairy wings. However, the fairy wings really didn't pan out the way I hoped and eventually I abandoned them as a bad idea.

Fast forward several months and Giraffe still doesn't have a soft toy, but while looking at armwarmer patterns on Ravelry I found this ammonite pattern, and showed it to her. As a fossil lover, she immediately decided it was amazing, so I bought it and the yarn - "greyish for the shell, with peachy tentacles and really cute eyes!" - and got to work.

Once into the swing of the pattern it was actually quite satisfying to make, but it was really hard on my shoulders and arms, in a way that crocheting hasn't been in a long time.

It was a stuff-as-you-go job, and Giraffe decided it was big enough (or possibly that she was fed up of waiting...) after 43 rounds. She wanted the shell to be coiled rather than flat, so I sewed it together in the coil that it naturally formed rather than trying to make it flat.

Next up was the face. There is directions for tentacles in the pattern, but the requirement for "really cute eyes" meant that I really wanted it to have a face, and I also wanted to do different kinds of tentacles, so I just started stitching and made one up that fit the requirements.

The eyes were leftover from the bundle of eyes I bought to make the dinosaur.

Once complete it was simply a matter of stitching the two pieces together and adding extra stuffing right at the end.

Et voila!

One ammonite, who has been named Shelly (and definitely has cute eyes)! Only took me a whole year!

Better late than never though, right?!
